Why is the process of making a ceramic product so slow?

The process of making ceramics is labour-intensive and slow.

The clay is first wedged to remove air bubbles so that the pieces don’t break during firing. Once the clay is ready, it is then thrown on the potter’s wheel to create different pieces. And when the clay becomes leather-hard, it is trimmed to give these pieces form and add details.

Thereafter, begins the wait for the pieces to completely air dry and additionally have enough number of pieces to fill a kiln, before it is bisque fired to provide it strength for the next step in the process, i.e. glaze firing. Then comes the extremely painful step of sanding the pieces and cleaning them to prepare them for glazing, which can take multiple days. And it is only after there are enough number of pieces to fill the kiln that the final firing is done, which adds strength to the pieces and renders them microwave, oven and dishwasher safe.
